    Huawei: welcome in Middle East

    Huawei recently launched two new flagship smartphones across the Middle East: the Ascend P2 and the Ascend Mate. The Ascend P2 will retail for RMB 3,010;the Ascend Mate runs approximately RMB 2,700. Both models are available beginning June 1st.     Nokia flagship: bye bye, China

    Nokia recently shut down its flagship store in Shanghai. The company's largest flagship worldwide, the Shanghai location was victim to the leathal combination of low rent/high prices. Nokia has taken a beating from high-end rivals Samsung and Apple and economy offerings from ascent Chinese brands like Huawei and Coolpad. Nokia's Beijing flagship closed in 2012.     Samsung top selling smartphone

    According to recent market research, Samsung is the clear winner in China’s smartphone market with 22% market share. With low prices and smart engineering aimed at mid-market buyers, Lenovo, Huawei, Kupai and ZTE followed with 10.7%, 9.9%, 9.5% and 8.9% market shares. Apple dropped to 7.7% market share in 2012. Over 165 million handsets were sold in 2012, a 100% increase from 2011. In terms of operating systems, Android holds nearly 70% of the market; Apple’s iOS has 12.8%. Source: iFeng

    Huawei faces Indonesia strike

    Huawei is facing a strike within the company’s Indonesia operations. Unionized Indonesian workers are holding marches to protest Huawei’s hiring of what the union argues to be illegal foreign hires. The union believes Huawei discriminates against the local Indonesia work force. This is the second recent instance of labor troubles for Huawei in Indonesia. According to reports, 90% of network providers in Indonesia use Huawei equipment.

    Huawei to build R&D center in Finland

    Huawei recently announced that it would invest 90 million USD over the next 5 years to build an R&D center in Finland. The center will focus on smart phone and tablet-related research. Huawei plans to initially hire 30 researchers, with the center eventually employing 100 research staff. Some have speculated that Huawei, as its share of the global smartphone market increases, seeks to hire former staff from Finland’s Nokia. Huawei’s overall investment in the EU is on the uptick and in September the company announced an expansion to its UK operations totaling 2 billion USD over 5 years.     Huawei and ZTE launch new products in the UK

    Huawei and ZTE recently launched new high end smartphones in UK. Huawei’s Ascend P1 is will be offered to British consumers by Vodaphone, while ZTE’s Grand X is expected to be provided to consumers by Virgin Mobile. Both brands will start sell the new phones from August. Huawei and ZTE are expected to gain market share with these two new phones. Source: iFeng
